Edward Davey MP and local Liberal Democrats launch their 'Clean-Sweep' Kingston Campaign. They too are fed up with dirty streets, abandoned cars and the rash of graffiti.

Since the Conservatives took control of Kingston Council in 1998, services have deteriorated badly. Many residents have not had their Green boxes collected for more than a month and complain that streets are not being swept. Graffiti is not being removed and abandoned cars are not being cleared. Last summer, gullies were not cleared and were unable to cope with the rain, causing local flooding.

At the last Council meeting, Liberal Democrats successfully got the Council to agree to tackle the problems of abandoned cars. Following Lib Dem pressure, Kingston Council is also now set to adopt a new 10 point graffiti plan. However, the Conservatives still refused to fund graffiti cleaning in full.

Liberal Democrats are now widening the campaign to "Clean-Sweep" Kingston. Councillor Wyn Evans said: "The Conservative-run Council has let people down. If they can't even get these basic services delivered, one dreads to think what damage they are doing to our local schools and old people's homes."

Lib Dem MP Edward Davey backs the campaign. He has pressed Government Ministers to ban the sale of paint sprays to minors and wants graffiti offenders made to clean up their own mess. He has asked local people to join in the Lib Dem campaign by reporting problems online and helping FOCUS take action.
