Plough Pond

The Plough Pond area is a conservation area which has one of the richest village pond ecosystems in Greater London. It is administered by Kingston Council but belongs (together with the green and much of the open land in the area) by Merton College Oxford.

There were rat reports by the pond and the council acted by closing up a drain and setting traps.  At one time we had water voles (protected species) in the pond and these were mistaken for rats.  However it is believed that these moved out when the rats moved in.  If you see a rat report it to your local councillor (hyper link here).

Thanks to the tireless work of volunteers the pond bank has been re-modelled so as to remove the reliance on the circulation pump.  The base of the pond has also been treated to stabilise it.  Further planting is expected to take place and local councillors are hopeful that in time money can be found to make the fencing more attractive.

There are many fates in the Old Malden area; some of these take place on Plough Green.  If you wish to advertise your fate for free on this site contact the site administrator admin@maldenandcoombe.co.uk.

Other Conservation areas in New and Old Malden include:

  • The Hogsmill Walk

  • The Groves Area

HOT NEWS: Thanks to quick action by Councillor Ian McDonald a new wildlife reserve may be set up close to Shannon Corner.  Based next to Beverley Brook, the Council had planned to build on it.  However Beverley School together with other schools are now looking to run it for environmental educational purposes.  If you can help contact the site administrator.
