Moor Lane OFSTED Report Published

21 July, 2000 OFSTED's report following a visit by inspectors to assess the progress made by Moor Lane Junior School over the past year has now been received by the school and the Local Education Authority.

The report recognises that the teachers have worked hard and that progress
has been made in a number of areas such as:
* improved results for English and science in 1999
* information technology
* marking and assessment
* reviewing and revising schemes of work, especially in English

The inspectors also recognise that pupils behave well and that relationships are good throughout the school.

However, the inspectors also found that:
* standards in English, mathematics and science need to improve
further.
* whilst there is some good teaching the amount of unsatisfactory
teaching is unacceptably high.
* the strategic leadership and management of the school are not sufficiently effective to deal adequately with the school's weaknesses

The report confirms that special measures are required to raise the standard of education in the school.  These measures will include the preparation of
a detailed action plan to address the issues raised in the report and further monitoring by Her Majesty's Inspectorate (HMI).

John Braithwaite, Director of Education and Leisure, said:
"(Headteacher) Jane Wright and her staff have worked hard to raise the standards at Moor Lane Junior School with the intensive support of the LEA.

OFSTED's report is a great disappointment for the school and the LEA and
does not reflect the progress which Kingston's inspectors have observed in Moor Lane School in recent years and which are reflected in the improving test results.  These are:

Moor Lane % of Year 6 Pupils Attaining Level 4 and Above in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 (provisional) respectively.

English 46 60 67 74
Mathematics 42 53 52 68
Science 38 55 61 85

I will now seek a meeting with the inspectors to discuss their finding in
greater detail although it would have been more helpful if Kingston's inspectors had had an opportunity to contribute their views on the school's
progress before the OFSTED inspectors reached their conclusions.

We will now concentrate on supporting the governors and the new staff to ensure that Moor Lane School moves forward positively, building on the already improving results, to ensure that its pupils receive a good and consistent standard of education."
