Delays hit New Malden Library Re-development

19 May, 2000 The date for completion of works at new Malden library has been set back several months and work now looks likely not to be finished before the end of April next year! The delay has been blamed on unforeseen work on both the roof and flooring of the old Library.

Liberal Democrat Councillors are concerned with finding out how and why these delays occurred and to ensure that the project now runs smoothly.

A concerned Ward Councillor Liberal Democrat Cllr Jordan said

"This delay will add not only to the cost of the re-development but also cause further inconvenience to both the residents and staff alike. It is of grave concern to us that the need for these works was not identified and resolved prior to the decanting of the library into it's temporary home."

And Leader of the Liberal Democrats Cllr Derek Osbourne added

"We will be examining this in great detail at the New Malden Neighbourhood Committee. This project now looks set to be over time and over budget. There are many questions that need to be answered. Why were these needed improvements not known before and how much extra has this cost the Council."
