Water Mains Bursts

14 March, 2001 Noon Yesterday on the Leatherhead Road (A243)
at the junction with Rushett lane (Malden Rushet), Fairoaks lane, Malden Rushett the 24 inch
water main fractured.

At the time Kelly Communication were reported to be drilling a cable duct under the junction.

The whole area was flooded with minor flooding reported at the rear garden of 351 Leatherhead Road.

Because the fracture was in the middle of the junction, there was the possiblity of a large void in the centre of the junction.

A large scale diversion, with road closures at :
Leatherhead Road j/w Bridge Road, Fairoak Lane j/w Warren Lane, LeatherHead Road at M25 J9, Christ Chruch Road j/w Horton Lane was immediately implemented by police.

These diversion are likely to be required for several days.  A Kingston Council spokesperson said "A clearer picture will be known on Wednesday morning. Every effort is being made to open the road as soon as possible".

Kingston Council has since received a large number of telephone calls relating to the lack of or low pressure in domestic water supplies.

The post codes in the
Borough which were affected
are KT2, KT4, KT5, KT6, KT9 and KT10.

Thames Water has since redirected the water to another mains pipe and low water pressure supplies have returned to MOST of the affected areas.

Thames Water had plans to turn off mains water supplies in the affected areas completely last night to make the necessary repairs and full water supplies and pressure SHOULD now have been returned to the affected areas.
