Mirza wins race to be Mayor

11 May, 2000 Last night Liberal Democrat Councillor Shiraz Mirza was elected the new Mayor of Kingston Upon Thames. Cllr Mirza beat his Conservative rival, the long serving Cllr Denis Doe, to become the first ever Asian major of Kingston.

To a packed public gallery Cllr Mirza gave an emotional acceptance speech praising what he called the era of true multi culturalism embracing the Borough. Cllr Mirza went on to promise to do his utmost for all residents and serve all the peoples of the Royal Borough to the best of his abilities. Cllr Mirza's wife Naheed will be his consort for the year and Cllr Ian McDonald was appointed as Deputy Mayor.

Commenting on his victory an elated Cllr Mirza said

"I am absolutely delighted to taken on this role. It is a great honour to become the first Mayor from the ethnic Community in this Millennium year. I hope to do justice to the faith placed in me and I am sure that this task will be made all the easier by the support of my wife Naheed and my deputy mayor Cllr Ian McDonald."

And Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Derek Osbourne who proposed Cllr Mirza added

"Shiraz worked tirelessly for the community long before he ever became a Councillor. He has the all the qualities that a great mayor needs and I have no doubt that he will do an excellent job and be an outstanding ambassador for the Borough. This is a highly deserved victory."
