Lib Dems call for new powers to stop Mobile Phone Masts

11 May, 2000 Liberal Democrat Councillors have called for new powers to allow local people to reject mobile phone masts being sited near their homes and public buildings at least until the possible effects on health are fully known. The calls go further than the recommendations of the Stewart Inquiry which asks that schools should have the power to protest against masts being sited on their grounds and buildings.

The Report focuses particularly on the possible effects that mobile phones and their masts may have on children. Liberal Democrat Councillors are arguing that Local Authorities and Councillors should be given the power to refuse the sightings of these masts in their areas if residents in the area object.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Tricia Bamford who is also a mother of three said

"We should not be forced to allow any more of the masts to go up until we know exactly what effect they are having on our children. The Government needs to go further than the current recommendations of the Stewart Inquiry and empower local People and Local Authorities to make their own choices on the sightings of these masts until the full health implications are known. What is the point in keeping masts away from schools if children and indeed all residents have to live next to one when they go home or find them on all other public buildings, like Tolworth Hospital, that they may have to go and visit ."
