| Liberal Democrats secure funds in battle against abandoned cars. | |
|
11 March, 2001 Liberal Democrat councillors last night secured a massive injection of cash in the battle to clear Kingston's streets of abandoned cars. As part of the budget process Liberal Democrat Councillors proposed to inject £100,000 of additional resources to help free the boroughs streets of this growing hazard.Currently Kingston Council is aware of over 700 abandoned cars and the number is rising fast. The money secured (£90,000) by the Liberal Democrat Councillors will pay for an additional officer to help address this problem and will also pay for the removal of over 1300 abandoned cars. The move is part of the on going Liberal Democrat "Clean Sweep" campaign which seeks to improve the quality of life across the borough. |
Liberal Democrat Environment Overview Chair Cllr Patricia Bamford commenting on the success said "The blight of abandoned cars is a problem faced across the borough and indeed across the Country. This money will allow the work which has been undertaken as to how to tackle this problem to have a visible benefit for residents. The Conservative Administrations proposals on this were woefully inadequate and we had to secure this funding. By securing this £90,000, £10,000 less than we would wish, Liberal Democrats have injected real money into a real problem and have demonstrated their commitment for a clean sweep in Kingston." |
