09 June, 2001 Fresh from the news that they will be granted over £180,000 of National Lottery funding towards the redevelopment of their headquarters, the 1st Old Malden (St. John the Baptist) Scout Group, held its annual Summer Fair on the Plough Green, Old Malden, last Saturday, 9th June. Deputy Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Councillor Steve Mama, opened the fair on the village green and stayed for nearly two hours to enjoy the community atmosphere the Scout Group manages to create at their traditional fair every year. Also attending was Councillor Ian McDonald, himself a past member of 1st Old Malden and who opened the fair last year. Along with other friends and visitors, he warmly congratulated the Group on the news that the Community Fund (the trading name of the National Lotteries Charities Board) will be making a grant towards its redevelopment project; news which certainly added to the excitement of the day. The Group is always keen to involve other organisations at its fair, to give them the opportunity to raise funds for their causes and gain publicity. Kingston Mencap and Diabetes UK were present, as were members of the congregation of the Group's sponsors, St. John the Baptist Parish Church.

Live and varied entertainment was arranged throughout
the afternoon. The large crowd enjoyed the sunshine while they
listened to the children of the Moor Lane School Steel Band from
Chessington and watched the girls from the Tolworth Tornadoes cheerleaders group (who recently appeared on TV). The Blue China Cows band paid a return visit and played a number of rock and pop numbers.
The event was also supported by the team from the recently refurbished "Plough" Harvester, which backs onto the Plough Green - they donated a family meal for four as part of the Grand Draw. Money raised on the day will support delivery of the Group's Scouting programme and go towards the redevelopment project. (Photos courteous of First Old Malden Scouts) |
