SITA set for questioning over festive fiasco of rubbish collection

09 February, 2001 Kingston's new refuse contractors SITA are to be put under the spot light at the next meeting of the Environment Overview Panel on the 1st of February at the Guildhall Kingston. SITA have agreed to attend and answer questions over the new contract following a request by the Chair of the Overview Panel Councillor Tricia Bamford.

Councillor Bamford requested that they attend and made room for an item on the agenda following the disastrous start to the new contract which resulted in a record number of calls to the council, over 8,000 on this issue in December alone! Many councillors

have been contacted by residents with horror stories of refuse being left uncollected for weeks on end.  Commenting in advance of the meeting Councillor Bamford (Lib Dem) said

"This is a chance for all the boroughs residents who had to put up with an appalling service in December and January to question the new contractor on what has gone so wrong. We must ensure that this new contract starts to work as it is supposed to fast and that no repetition of this collapse in service be allowed to happen.

We have all got some serious questions to ask SITA and I hope residents will take the opportunity to come along and participate."
