Two Years and Two over spends - Tory financial mismanagement continues

09 February, 2001 Kingston Council is heading for its second overspend in as many years according to a report out this week. It will mean that in both budgets set since the current Conservative Administration took control of the Council they have failed to spend within the limits they set for themselves.

In a report by the Director of Finance for this week’s Cabinet meeting, Councillors are warned that the Council is currently overspending its budget by £670,000. Last year, the Council was forced to re-direct £560,000 from its

reserves and on street park account to plug the gap caused by its overspending.

Commenting on the report, Lib Dem finance spokesperson Cllr Wyn Evans said:

"The Conservative Administration has consistently failed to keep within its own spending limits. Ultimately, this will only lead to higher taxes or cuts in services. Given that the Conservative’s have increased the Council Tax by an average of £160 in the last 2 years and made significant reductions to key services, this latest overspend only serves a warning that worse is yet to come."
