Boroughs Latest eyesore - further evidence of neglect.

7 April, 2001

Kingston's grubbier side has taken yet another turn this week as Liberal Democrat Councillors point to further evidence of a decline in the boroughs general state of cleanliness. The target this week is the static recycling sites which have reached a disgraceful state across the borough.

The borough has seen a serious decline in cleanliness under the Conservative administration, a problem exacerbated by weaknesses in the rubbish and recycling contractors ability to deliver or rather to

collect. Liberal Democrat Councillors have been inspecting some of the worst affected sites and are demanding swift action to clean them up.

Commenting on the mess, Liberal Democrat Environment Overview Chair Cllr Tricia Bamford said

"The state of this site is not unique, it is a common sight across the borough and must be addressed. By allowing these places to become such a mess the Conservative Administration is failing to keep residents local environment at an acceptable standard and the worry is it may discourage people from using these locations to recycle. The new contractor is clearly still showing weaknesses and it is a matter that I will raise with them at the April meeting of the Environment Overview Panel which they are due to attend. What these images demonstrate is further evidence of the decline in standards across the borough and the need for a clean-sweep."
