If this isn't bad enough, in future years government housing grants to the Royal Borough and borrowing allowances are very likely to be severely restricted as Kingston will be judged as unable to spend these monies efficiently or effectively. Commenting on the £500,000 of overdue work Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesperson Cllr Brian Bennett said "Once again Cllr Johnston has failed the residents of Kingston. He has failed to address the problem with the contractors SERCO for months and the result is the Council has failed to deliver planned improvements to it's property. This is an unacceptable delay brought about by the continuing inadequacies of SERCO and Cllr Johnston's neglect. This incompetence makes me extremely angry, the councils tenants, leaseholders the homeless and all council tax payers are being badly served by this incompetent and exhausted Tory administration " |

Liberal Democrat Councillors have attacked the Conservative Administration after it was revealed that an incredible 1/2 a million pounds worth of planned repairs to council property were not carried out in the financial year 2000 - 2001. The reason for this appears to be serious failings on the part of SERCO the councils contractor for building repairs and maintenance, a situation which the Cabinet member with responsibility Conservative Cllr Paul Johnston failed to address. The money will now be put back into the housing reserves but should be used in this new financial year to complete those projects which the Conservatives have failed to deliver on this year. This unfortunately could be the tip of the iceberg as there are strong signs indicating a further massive underspend of approaching £2 million in the housing improvement programme. This incompetent management of housing resources not only means that tenants will continue to face damp draughty inefficiently heated homes but it will cost more to remedy as the conditions | |
