New guidelines will make trips safer for young people

7 April, 2001

Each year many youth organisations apply for grants from Kingston Council. Thanks to a Liberal Democrat initiative, in future organisations will have to prove that they follow good practice if they arrange residential trips for young people.

Grants will not be awarded unless the Council is satisfied that adequate procedures are in place to ensure that sufficient adults accompany the young people, that hazardous activities are properly supervised and that emergency procedures have been planned. The Grants and Awards Panel recently agreed to provide guidelines and model procedures to all youth organisations.

Councillor Mary Reid, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Education, and a member of the Grants and Awards Panel, commented

"I want to thank the other political parties for supporting my initiative. This will heighten the awareness of all organisations that work with young people, and will emphasise the importance the Council attaches to the safety of its younger residents. I hope that in future we can provide further guidance about other aspects of working with young people. For example, we would want to encourage training for volunteers, and would want to be sure that child protection practices, like police checks, have been observed.

I greatly value the extensive work done by voluntary youth organisations in the Borough. This is just the first step in a campaign to help them to increase their professionalism by sharing good practice."
