Liberal Democrat Councillors welcome memorial to Kingston's aviation history

3 June, 2000 Liberal Democrat Councillors last night welcomed the decision of the Kingston Town Neighbourhood Committee to approve the location of a memorial funded by the Kingston Aviation Heritage Memorial Fund near Kingston Bridge on the Clarence Street footway near Thames Street.

The current form of the memorial is a five stoned obelisk standing upon a two tier plinth, surrounded by five benches, with each face carrying a medallion and a text plate relating to the founding fathers of the industry and the achievements of the industry. Mounted on the top of the obelisk would be a sculpture of a Hunter Aircraft.

The approved location will now be worked up and will require a planning consent by the Development Control Committee.

It is hoped that the monument should be in place by 2002 to commemorate the 90th year of the founding of Sopwiths.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Chrissie Hitchcock said:

"I welcome the fact we have resolved this issue which has been doing the rounds for some time. I look forward to seeing this memorial in place which will remind all of us of the unique role played by Kingston and many of our present and former residents in the history of the aviation industry."
