Kingston Town demands to have a voice into the future of Canbury Gardens

3 June, 2000 The Kingston Town Neighbourhood Committee last night insisted that it should have a strong voice in the new working group set up by the Royal Park Neighbourhood Committee looking into all aspects of the future of Canbury Gardens.

Faced with proposals for a new footpath and cycle-path which would mean a degree of hard surfacing across some of the grassed and planted area of the Gardens Councillors agreed to defer a decision until more work and consultations had taken place on the proposals. At the meeting a petition was handed in against the proposals by the Friends of Canbury Gardens.

Councillors were concerned to hear that Royal Park Neighbourhood had set up a Working Party without consulting any Kingston Town Councillors who have responsibility for part of the Gardens.

Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson Cllr Derrick Chester said

"I hope it was an oversight on the part of Royal Park Conservative Councillors not to involve Kingston Town in the working party on the future of Canbury Gardens. We must all work together, with members of the public, on any proposals which will alter the Gardens and ensure that full and proper consultation takes place with all concerned."
