Tim Brown - Independent Conservative said "Speaking as an Accountant and Auditor by profession, in my view the "no-frills" Conservative Budget was a combination of asset-stripping and dubious creative accounting, not the prudent and common sense approach..."
Dennis De-Lord - Independent Conservative Councillor - "Their proposals were a cynical and distasteful manipulation of the people of this Borough. Engineered to do one thing and one thing only, to bribe residents this year and make them pay for it next".
Roger Hayes - Liberal Democrat said "The Tory budget proposal was not just irresponsible and unsustainable in its ill thought out fragility, this shabby eleventh hour trick attempted to bribe the residents with their own assets in a one off attempt to buy votes. It contained very nearly £1.5m worth off officer identified risk, almost equivalent to the level of Council reserves".

Liberal Democrats in Old Malden have been fighting for more cash to repair roads and pavements. Following a many complaints at council that the Conservative Administration had continually failed to identify old Malden Roads, one Liberal Democrat councillor decided to survey the road for himself. Conservatives claimed that such detail was unfair on officers, however the councillor - an engineer himself - did the work as he claims "Locally the Conservatives had no interest in repairing such roads until they were aware that we had carried out a survey. Then of course as usual they claim to be interested and of course claim to have done all the work..." Now the Lib Dem Councillor plans same tactic with other roads - |

School Crossing Patrol *** Church Road Crossing Patrol Found! If you can help at other locations in the borough by helping School children cross the road 5 days a week in all weather during term time, 3/4 of an hour at the start and end of the school day? Contact Brian Spratt at Kingston Council on 020-8547-5992. Pay is around £39 a week. Liberal Democrats press for partnership deal with schools over crossing *** Liberal Democrats are pressing for a partnership deal with local primary schools. Under the deal, schools finding it difficult to recruit crossing patrols would allow extra flexibility over their staff contracts for support staff to allow them to carry out the crossing patrol. One of the problems in recruiting is that while the hourly rate of pay is very good for crossing patrol staff, the hours make it very difficult to earn a full living. With partnership working the member of staff will be able to work and be paid by the school for their normal school duties, but be allowed time to do the crossing duty, where they will be paid by the Council and have the council insurance to cover the work. Commenting, one prominent Liberal Democrat Councillor said, "Partnership working is the way forward. This can mean extra pay for classroom support workers and a more ready supply of people willing to do crossing patrols at a time when it is becoming more difficult to find those doing the work". One Local resident - a Head Teacher of a Primary School in a neighboring authority and a Tolworth school governor said, "I regularly do a crossing patrol myself. It is so important for me as a Head teacher to ensure my children have safe access across the road, however I am aware that not all Head Teachers take this view - for me however the rule on loco parentis means that there is a clear moral responsibility for safety". The Liberal Democrat Councillor became concerned when the crossing patrol finished at Church Road, Old Malden (prior to the current crossing patrol) and discovered that parents were not passed on any notice. "At the time", explains the councillor, "I had to step in and ask the police to attend the site for a few days and ask the school to send a note out to parents. It was so unsafe with small children crossing a busy road unaided, as a qualified teacher myself I have had to deal with cases of children being knocked over and I am determined that all shall be done to limit the risks in Old Malden". The Liberal Democrat Councillor now wants to not only press for Council - school partnership working but also for a team of volunteers who could do emergency cover when required. For the last seven years he has been campaigning for a pedestrian crossing outside Malden Parochial school, but has had opposition from local Tory activists and Conservative councillors, who prefer not to support Liberal Democrat initiatives.
